February has been considered by others as a ‘freak-month’ because it is the only month in a year which does not complete the 30 day cycle. Moreover, every four years we adjust our calendar by adding one day to it (leap year). How ‘abnormal’ is that? The name February comes from the Latin word “februum” which means ‘purification’. Since Romans considered winter as ‘month-less’ period, the months January and February were added later, the latter being the last month of the year. For more details, ‘google’ it…:)
Today is the feast day of St Brigid, one of the patrons of Ireland and considered the famous female leader of early Celtic Church. She is often depicted holding a lamp which symbolizes ‘learning and wisdom’ – excellent ‘tools’ that can be used as we welcome the often considered ‘not normal’ month of February. How interesting is that?
And in the words of St. Broccan Cloen:
Ni bu Sanct Brigid suanach
Ni bu huarach im sheirc Dé,
Sech ni chiuir ni cossena
Ind nóeb dibad bethath che.
Ni bu huarach im sheirc Dé,
Sech ni chiuir ni cossena
Ind nóeb dibad bethath che.
Saint Brigid was not given to sleep,
Nor was she intermittent about God's love of her;
Not merely that she did not buy, she did not seek for
The wealth of this world below, the holy one.
Nor was she intermittent about God's love of her;
Not merely that she did not buy, she did not seek for
The wealth of this world below, the holy one.
