The first ‘Woe’ (The discourse pronounced by Jesus in which He criticizes the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, calling them hypocrites)

God is a just judge. He blesses those who hear him and He punishes those who sin against Him. But God is also a God of mercy and compassion. He forgives. Whether one obeys Him or disobeys Him God continues to manifest His love. It is through His love that we are blessed and it is because of love that we are saved and forgiven. This is the truth about the kingdom of God. Nevertheless, man is not without his willingness to receive or reject His grace.

'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people's faces, neither going in yourselves nor allowing others to go who want to.’

The first stern pronouncement of Jesus against the teachers of the law and the Pharisees was based on the foundational truth that God is merciful and compassionate. These religious leaders teach and preach the contrary about the mercy and compassion of God. They impose laws and norms which has nothing to do with the commandments of God. For them it is enough to say that God is a stern judge and by doing so they present to people that they are hopeless in their pursuit to enter His Kingdom.   

The primary issue is not on how much or how little one does but it is the fact that one forgets that his or her own very own existence is the grace of God. Jesus called them hypocrites for this very reason: they belittle this grace; they depend so much on their ability and knowledge, thus not allowing God to be God in their lives.

Dio è giudice giusto. Egli benedice chi lo ascolta e punisce coloro che peccano contro di Lui. Ma Dio è anche un Dio di misericordia e di compassione. Egli perdona. Se una persona obbedisce o disobbedisce a Lui, Egli continua a manifestare il Suo amore. È’ attraverso il suo amore che siamo benedetti ed è per amore che noi siamo stati salvati e perdonati. Questa è la verità sul regno di Dio. Tuttavia, l'uomo può accogliere o rifiutare la Sua grazia.

 ‘Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, che chiudete il regno dei cieli davanti alla gente; di fatto non entrate voi, e non lasciate entrare nemmeno quelli che vogliono entrare.’

Il primo forte pronunciamento di Gesù contro gli scribi e i farisei si basava su questa fondamentale verità: che Dio è misericordioso e compassionevole. Questi capi religiosi insegnano e predicano il contrario della misericordia e delle compassione di Dio. Impongono leggi e norme che non hanno nulla a che vedere con i comandamenti di Dio. Secondo loro, è sufficiente dire che Dio è un giudice severo per far entrare i fedeli che sono alla Sua ricerca disperata nel suo Regno.

Il problema principale non è quanto si fa o come si fa ma è il fatto che ci si dimentica che la stessa esistenza di ogni creatura è voluta dalla grazia di Dio. Gesù chiama I dottori e I farisei ipocriti proprio per questo: sottovalutano questa grazia; essi credono di dipendere soltanto dalle loro capacità e conoscenze, non permettendo così che Dio sia Dio: origine della vita, di ogni capacità e conoscenza.
