Singapura Medley

Located at the southern tip of Malay peninsula, the Republic of Singapore prides itself as the world's fourth leading finance center, the fourth wealthiest country in the world in terms of GDP, largely because of its strategic location as a port, which continues to be the five busiest ports' in the worl. Singapore also enjoys a very high standard of living, ranked by some economists as Asia's ideal place to live in. The name Singapore is derived from the Malay word 'Singapura' or often reffered to as the 'Lion City'. It has been said that the founder of the island, Sang Nila Utama, saw a beast, a tiger,  which he mistakenly thought for a lion. Thus the Malay name Singapura.

I was blessed to have a chance to visit Singapore with my family. The four-day, three-night trip to the 'lion city' was exemplary and worth sharing for. I have got to meet some classmates in college and a friend who worked and whom i met in Taiwan. They seemed happy and contented to what's going on with their life here.

Singapore is generally a clean city; the people are nice and welcoming. It is perhaps due to it diverse ethnic population which comprise the 4.9 million population: the malay, chinese, hindus and caucassians. They are more at ease meeting different people and races. Another factor maybe is due to the fact that most of them speak and understand English, however different the accent is. Tamil, Mandarin Chinese, and Malay are also spoken.

I was able to meet my goal of finding at least a dozen Singaporeans who will treat and help a stranger for direction and some basic facts about their country. I met fifteen of them. I promised myself to make an article on this matter. I wish to come back and if i am not a religious i would definitely like to work in this small but progressive, multi-cultural country.
