Day 5: "I am my brother's keeper"

Signorina Carmela Montanarelle has been working at the Portineria (Information Desk) of the Angelicum University for three years now. When I asked her about her ‘goal’ this new year and upon learning the purpose of my inquiry she laughed and could not think of any specific goal to say. Fortunately, my amiable insistence worked for her and maybe out of generosity she mused of the same goal she has been pursuing for many years now – to be her youngest brother’s keeper – only do it better each year.

Carmela is the second child of four from Gioia del Colle, Bari, Pulgia, Italy. Her youngest brother was born with a special need and out of familial love and a good heart she decided to dedicate her life to support him. She changed her educational degree from culinary to electronics and telecommunications as soon as she knew that her youngest brother intends to pursue that field. She even accepted a job position at the same pre-seminary building where her brother stayed as he completes his college education, just to be physically around to attend to his needs.

Here we have a story of an independent and intelligent woman who is not only sensitive about the need of other people but who is also willing to sacrifice her personal aspirations over a responsibility she had a choice not to fulfill, but happily accepted. She said her life is dedicated to helping her family – her mother back home and his youngest brother who is at present in the care of an institution for persons with special needs.

Kudos Signorina!
