(The parable of the ten virgins: five wise, five fool Mt 25.1-13)
Responsibility is not just an initiative to do something but the ability to decide and do what is right and good. The contrast between the five wise and five foolish virgin boils down to this: who were ready to receive salvation? Jesus did not speak about the Kingdom of heaven per se but of who will enter it. It would seem that the ten virgins were responsible enough to light their lamps and wait for the arrival of the Bridegroom. However, the five wise virgins entered the banquet with the Bridegroom because they had enough oil for their lamps, while the other five not only had the difficulty to work double time but to find out all their efforts were put in vain.
If the entrance to the kingdom depends on mathematical equations, all ten should have been admitted because they would have calculated the time of the arrival and would have known how much oil to bring to keep the lamps lit. But the reality of the coming of the kingdom is beyond mathematics. ‘Stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.’
Staying awake is not about spending our time on what to prepare for because we already know what will come: the Bridegroom, the Banquet. Rather, staying awake should be spent on ‘how’ to maintain what we have as we await for the unknown time.
‘Keep the lamp burning’ even in the midst of crisis, tension and uncertainty, by that oil which is love and of which only the wise persons possess. We are responsible for our salvation.
La responsabilità non è solo un'iniziativa per fare qualcosa, ma la capacità di decidere e fare ciò che è giusto e buono. Il contrasto tra le cinque vergini sagge e le cinque vergini stolte si riduce a questo: sono pronte a ricevere la salvezza? Gesù non ha parlato del Regno dei cieli in sé, ma di chi può entrare. Sembra che le dieci vergine fossero abbastanza responsabili per accendere le loro lampade e attendere l’arrivo dello Sposo. Tuttavia, le cinque vergini sagge sono entrate il banchetto con lo Sposo perché avevano abbastanza olio per le lampade, mentre le altre cinque non hanno avuto solo la difficoltà di lavorare il doppio perchè si sono dovute recare a comprare l’olio, ma poi hanno scoperto che il loro sforzo è stato inutile.
Se l'entrata nel regno dipendesse dalle equazioni matematiche, tutte e dieci avrebbero dovuto essere ammesse, perché avrebbero calcolato il tempo di arrivo e avrebbero saputo la quantità di olio da portare per mantenere le lampade accese. Ma, la realtà della venuta del regno è oltre la matematica. "Vegliate, perché non sapete né il giorno né l'ora."
Restare sveglio non significa spendere il nostro tempo fino ad una scodenza certa per l’evento atteso perché sappiamo già che cosa verrà: lo sposo, il banchetto, ma non sappiamo quando. Piuttosto, restare sveglio deve significare impiegare il tempo per "come" mantenere ciò che abbiamo per un tempo sconosciuto.
"Tenere la lampada accesa" anche in mezzo alla crisi, tensione ed incertezza, che l'olio che è l'amore è ciò che solo i saggi possiedono e sanno mantenere . Siamo responsabili per la nostra salvezza.
